Reducing underwater noise

We propose to use metamaterial-type coatings to reduce flow-induced noise and thus contribute to realizing the energy transition in the North Sea, which is crucial for sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy systems in the circular economy.

Underwater pipes are key in submarine pipelines and water-based renewable energy technologies. However, turbulent flows in such pipes generate noise that impacts marine life, impairs communication activities, and can damage surrounding equipment.

I believe that through flow control we can enable a broad range of objectives including drag reduction and noise suppression.

It is fascinating to explore how thin advanced coating can be used to solve the challange of reducing underwater low-frequency noise.
